This plug-in for Eudora changes the capitalization of text in a few useful ways. To install, place it in the "Eudora Stuff" folder inside the Eudora application folder. Eudora will install this plug-in the next time it is launched. You can see which plug-ins you have installed by selecting "About Extended Message Services…" in the Apple menu.
To use UPPERlower's translation, select the text you want to translate. Select the "Extended Services" menu item in the Edit menu, and then select one of the translation services from the submenu. The selected text will be translated with the option you selected. If pick UPPERlower without any text selected, the whole message will be translated.
UPPERlower provides four translation services: Upper Case, Lower Case, Word Caps and Sentence Caps. Each translation service is discribed below.
Upper Case: This translation capitalizes every letter, leaving all other characters alone.
Lower Case: This translation lowers every letter, leaving all other characters alone.
Word Case: This translation capitalizes the first character of every word. The beginning of the word is determined if a letter follows any other character besides another letter. There is one exception. If the letter follows an apostrophy after another letter, it is assumed to be part of a word and is changed to lower case.
Sentence Case: This makes a good attempt at doing correct capitalization of the selected text. The algorithm isn't extensive (e.g. it doesn't know about proper nouns, abbreviations etc), but it's quite useful make something all in upper case much easier to read. Basically this translation capitalizes the first letter found after a period, ! or ?. Special cases are handled as follows:
- The first letter selected is capitalized.
- If the letter immediately follows a period, it becomes lower case. (ex: qualcom.com)
- The letter "i" is capitalized if not preceded or followed by a letter, period, ! or ?. If it is the very last character in the selection, then it is capitalized if not preceded by a letter, period, ! or ?.
- After finding a period, ! or ?, the search for a letter to capitalize will be cancelled if a number, comma, colon or semicolon is found. (ex: version 3.0)
- Pronouns will not get capitalized.
- The first letter after an abbreviated word will be capitalized as if it is the first letter of a new sentence.
